The Atlantic Sunset Project Meets with the Cabo Ortegal UNESCO Global Geopark to Advance Upcoming Initiatives

As part of the Atlantic Sunset project, a virtual meeting was held on May 22 between the project team and the Board of Directors of the Cabo Ortegal UNESCO Global Geopark. The aim of the meeting was to continue strengthening collaboration and to advance the upcoming planned actions in the region.

During the meeting the general objectives of the initiative were discussed, along with the European funding program, ongoing scientific studies within the geopark environment, and the latest developments in technological infrastructure that will be implemented through the project.

The meeting was attended by the folloging institutional representatives: Ana María López, Mayor of Cariño, Alberto González, Mayor of Valdoviño, Joaquina Piñeiro, Councillor for Tourism of Ortigueira, Milagros Fraga, Tourism Technician of Ortigueira.

Representing the Atlantic Sunset project were: Jorge Mira (Professor of Physics at USC), project ambassador and member of the Geopark’s Scientific Committee; Maricarmen Tapia and Paula Noya (researchers at USC), geographers responsible for the scientific work to be carried out in the Geopark; Xurxo Cegarra and Eloy Calatayud, technological experts in the project (Wireless Galicia S.L.); Daniel Fernández (CEER Foundation), coordinator of the Atlantic Sunset project.

This meeting reinforces the collective commitment to valuing sunsets through sustainable development, innovation, and the promotion of the region’s natural and cultural heritage, representing a new step forward in the implementation of strategic actions within the Geopark territory.

The next event of the Atlantic Sunset project will be held in person in Angers, France, in June 2025. This event will include the semi-annual meeting of the Atlantic Sunset project’s steering committee, a Transnational Workshop to analyze the results obtained during the first half of the project, and various technical meetings between project partners.
