The celebration of the Interreg Cooperation Day 2025, held as part of the “Interreg Cooperation Day – Atlantic Sunset project”, took place on Friday, September 19, with the active participation of students from the secondary schools of Muxía and Fisterra. They enjoyed a morning filled with scientific outreach, technology, and European cooperation activities.
Organized by the Euroregional Studies Centre Foundation (FCEER) in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and Wireless Galicia, the sessions brought young students closer to the spirit of cooperation and innovation that defines the project, which focuses on promoting the sunsets of the Costa da Morte as a symbol of the westernmost edge of continental Europe.
Chasing the Sun at the End of the Saint James Way
At the IES Ramón Caamaño in Muxía, the morning began with a presentation by FCEER introducing the Atlantic Sunset project, its connection to the Galicia–North Portugal Euroregion, and the European Union’s role in promoting sustainability and responsible tourism.
Afterwards, the Wireless Galicia team guided students through an immersive experience using virtual reality (VR) headsets, allowing them to “travel” through Atlantic sunsets in 360 degrees. They also presented a complete technological spot, similar to those to be set up in each project location, and carried out a live 360° video broadcast via YouTube.
At the IES Fin do Camiño in Fisterra, FCEER also opened the session with a presentation of the project and the symbolic value of the Costa da Morte as a European landmark.
Professor Lucrezia López, researcher at the USC, delivered the lecture “Chasing the Sun at the End of the Camino”, highlighting the cultural and symbolic importance of Fisterra’s sunset within the imagination of the Camino de Santiago.
Later, Wireless Galicia repeated the technological session, allowing students to immerse themselves virtually in the Atlantic sunsets and explore how innovation can help to showcase and preserve the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
A Celebration Connecting Science, Culture, and European Cooperation
These educational activities served as a prelude to the afternoon session of Atlantic Sunset on the Costa da Morte, which celebrated the Interreg Cooperation Day 2025 under the theme “Science, culture, sustainable tourism, and European cooperation around the last sunset of continental Europe.”
The Atlantic Sunset project, co-financed by the Interreg Atlantic area programme, promotes cross-border collaboration and the enhancement of the territory through innovation, culture, and sustainability.
