On 19 September, the Costa da Morte (Galicia) will become the stage for one of the most remarkable events of the Atlantic Sunset project—a unique gathering that will bring together European cooperation, appreciation of the Atlantic territory, citizen participation, and the magic of sunsets.
This initiative is part of the official programme of Interreg Cooperation Day 2025, the European campaign that each year celebrates the power of cross-border cooperation across the EU.
An event in dialogue with the territory
The programme, designed to foster community interaction, will unfold in one of the most emblematic landscapes of Europe: the Costa da Morte, a place from which the last sunsets of the continent can be admired.
Planned activities include: immersive virtual reality experiences, guided observation of the most extreme sunset in continental Europe, educational outreach in local schools, talks and open-air concerts, among other surprises.
Interreg Cooperation Day
Interreg Cooperation Day is an annual campaign celebrating European cooperation across borders. Every year, thousands of people take part in cultural, sports, and community events organised by Interreg programmes throughout the continent.
Since its launch in 2012, more than 1,490 events have been held, reaching over 47 million people. The aim is to showcase, through participatory activities, the real results of European cooperation and its impact on regions.
Interreg Cooperation Day is celebrated on 21 September and during the surrounding weeks, offering multiple opportunities for programmes and territories to get involved.
The Atlantic Sunset Project
The Atlantic Sunset project, within the framework of the Interreg Atlantic Area programme, seeks to highlight the natural and cultural heritage associated with the westernmost sunsets of continental Europe, especially within the Atlantic region (Ireland, France, Spain, and Portugal).
Its main goal is to showcase and promote the westernmost sites of Europe as unique destinations thanks to the singularity of their sunsets, combining sustainable tourism, landscape appreciation, science, culture, and citizen participation.
The Atlantic Sunset project is led by the Fundación Centro de Estudios Euroregionales Galicia-Norte de Portugal (FCEER), and includes the following partners from Spain, Portugal, France, and Ireland: University of Santiago de Compostela, Wireless Galicia, University of Seville, University of Porto, University of Angers, and the National University of Ireland, Galway.
